What is Acuamed?

Acuamed is the main instrument of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment for development of the A.G.U.A. Programme across the Mediterranean River basins. The public corporation Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas S.A. thus handles the contractual, construction, purchasing and operational arrangements for all manner of public works in the water sector. Projects which are being undertaken in the public interest within the Segura, Júcar, Ebro, Andalusian Mediterranean and Internal Catalan Basins.

Acuamed is responsible for more than a hundred A.G.U.A. Programme initiatives around the Mediterranean basins, in pursuit of three prime objectives: to increase water resources, to improve water management and to restore the environment.

The measures entrusted to Acuamed will provide 850 cubic hectometres (more than 1000 in total including other Ministry of the Environment bodies) of fully guaranteed new water resources available each year, from Málaga to Girona.

Our most valuable ally in sourcing water where resources are scarce is desalination, the most cost-effective, flexible and the cleanest way of guaranteeing supply irrespective of weather conditions.

Desalination is the process by which seawater can be turned into a fully usable water resource, both for human supply and for irrigation and industrial purposes. Major technological advances have led to reverse osmosis becoming the most widespread and heavily employed method worldwide.

The application of desalination has served to resolve major water shortage problems on all five continents. At present more than 24 million cubic metres of desalinated water are produced each day worldwide, enough to supply a population of more than 120 million inhabitants.

At Acuamed we also modernise irrigation systems, preserve and restore the natural environment, prevent risks of flooding and seek out permanent supplies of water where there is currently a shortage.

Acuamed works to improve the life of the Spanish people.
